IELTS Listening module is made up of four sections and a total of forty questions.

Section 1: A conversation between two people in a social context

Section 2: One person speaking in a social context

Section 3: A conversation between several people (up to 4) in an educational or training context

Section 5: One person speaking in an educational or training context

Tip1: Listen carefully any conversation and you will notice that important words will generally be used many times in that conversation.

So usually, the main ideas of the conversation will be the words that are repeal used throughout the conversation.

Tip2: The English language can convey different meaning or feeling just from tonal changes. So in your IELTS test, listening carefully to a speaker’s change in pitch or tone. For instance, changes in pitch can convey surprise or importance and will likely indicate something critical in the conversation.

Tip3: In IELTS tests you will be asked about specific pieces of information that you have heard in the listening module so pay careful attention to adjectives (Adjectives are words that describe or modify another person or thing in the sentence) including numbers or colors and sizes of things.

Tip4: To do well in the IELTS listening module you have to demonstrate you understand the conversation. The examiners are not just looking for you to repeat the conversation word for word. To do well, you must interpret or paraphrase the conversation in your own words. A good way to do this is to uncover hidden meaning.

Tip 5: This last tip is perhaps the most important – You need to make short notes as you are listening to the tape.

Unless you have a perfect memory, it is likely you will forget vital information when it comes time to answer the questions. By quickly recording the key pieces of information as you go, you will be able to refer back to the important facts. It will also help you remember the theme or direction of the conversation from your short hand notes. So if the question asks about some information that you did not record, your short hand notes should help you piece together the information that you need.
